Fibre From Backbone to Premises

Our fibre optic solutions cover the full path from the backbone through to the customer premises. OTS plans the route, installs the duct, places and splices the cable, tests it against the operator’s acceptance criteria, and hands over a network that is labelled, documented and ready to carry traffic.

Route planning and permitting support

Every fibre build starts on paper. We survey the proposed route, identify obstacles such as existing utilities, road crossings and watercourses, and produce the drawings needed for the work to be approved. We support the permitting process with the relevant authorities so that civil work is not held up once crews are mobilised.

Trenching and duct installation

Where the route runs underground, we excavate, lay duct, and install the chambers and manholes that keep the network maintainable later. This is carried out by our own supervised crews — the same teams that deliver our civil works and construction scope — so trenching, reinstatement and cable installation stay under a single contract.

Cable pulling and blowing

Fibre is placed either by pulling it through the duct or by blowing it with compressed air. Blowing is generally preferred on long duct runs, because it puts less tensile load on the cable and allows greater distances in a single section. We select the method to suit the duct, the route length and the cable type.

Splicing and termination

Individual fibres are fusion spliced and terminated into closures, patch panels and distribution frames. Splice loss is a primary determinant of end-to-end performance on a long span, so joints are kept to the minimum the route allows, and every one is measured rather than assumed.

Testing, labelling and documentation

We test with OTDR and power meter. An OTDR trace shows the location and loss of each event along the fibre — splices, connectors, bends and breaks — while power meter readings confirm end-to-end insertion loss against the link budget. Results are recorded per fibre and issued as part of the handover pack.

Single-mode fibre of the type used in access and backbone networks is specified internationally under ITU-T G.652. In practice we work to the fibre standards and acceptance criteria of the operators we serve, which vary by client and by project.

Every network we hand over is tested, labelled and documented, so the next engineer to open a chamber can identify what is in it without guesswork.
